Life#
Born in Çanakkale in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Mayer Festo Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community. Mayer Festo had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi).
Work began in Çanakkale in 1891/92, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mayer Festo in Jerusalem (Kudüs) as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru), where the entries run to 1895/96. Next came Vlorë (Avlonya) from 1896 to 1898. The last posts were in Çanakkale, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1901.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 1,000 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Jerusalem, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
