Life

Hanna Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Hanna also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.

Work began in Jerusalem (Kudüs) in 1884/85, at about 24, paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Hanna as Musillik in Jerusalem, where the entries run to 1894/95, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1891/92. Next came Jaffa (Yafa) from 1895 to 1899, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1895/96, then a return to Jerusalem from 1899 to 1901. The last posts were in Jaffa again from 1901 to 1903.

The salary went from 142 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 500 in 1902/03, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Jaffa, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 19 years of salary come to 65,928 kuruş, 57 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
