Life#
Şişmanyan Bogos Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Şişmanyan Bogos also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Galata in 1878, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Şişmanyan Bogos in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1894/95. In 1895/96 the lists place Şişmanyan Bogos in Yeni camii postanesi.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 650 in 1892/93, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1895/96, the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
