Life#
Yusuf Agah Efendi was born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Yusuf Agah also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian and Greek (Rum).
At about 22, in 1882/83, Yusuf Agah began work in Serres (Siroz), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Yusuf Agah as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Chios (Sakız), where the entries run to 1887/88. Next came Bodrum in 1888/89, then Nazilli from 1889 to 1902. The last post was in Çine in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 600 in 1888/89, as Muhabere Memuru in Bodrum, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
