Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Jewish (Musevi) community, Salamon Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Salamon had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi).
Work began in Beyoğlu in 1889/90, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Salamon as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru) in Beyoğlu, where the entries run to 1896/97. Salamon then moved to Beirut (Beyrut), Serres (Siroz) and Adana from 1898 to 1902. The last post was in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 480 in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Thessaloniki, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde İstanbul doğumlu Yahudi ve ..." by AHMET SÜRMEN (2011) probably refers to Salamon, since the name and the birthplace agree.
