Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Mehmet Kadri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1887/88, Mehmet Kadri began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Mehmet Kadri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu. For 1895 to 1898 the lists have no entry. Mehmet Kadri then moved to Ioannina (Yanya) and Geyve from 1898 to 1901. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1906, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1903/04 as a postal official (Posta Memuru) and from 1905/06 as Basmemur Muavini.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 700 in 1905/06, the peak, as Basmemur Muavini in Istanbul, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
