Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Istanbul in 1886/87, at about 13, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu. Next came Lasid, Dafni, Mount Athos (Aynaroz), Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Edirne, five places in seven years, with a rise to official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru) in 1899/1900. From 1902 to 1904 the annual entries place Ali Rıza in Istanbul, the birthplace, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 800 in 1903/04, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
