Life

Begos Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Begos also wrote French as well as Turkish.

Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From 1893/94 to 1895/96 every annual entry places Begos in Galata, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1894/95 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti).

Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 140 in 1894/95, in the Pul Kitabeti in Galata, when 6 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 4,560 kuruş, 25 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
