Life#
Cafer Tayyar Efendi was born in Lemnos (Limni) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Cafer Tayyar also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1893/94, Cafer Tayyar began work in Lemnos, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Cafer Tayyar as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Yozgat. The last posts were in Dafni in 1899/1900, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), and Mount Athos in 1900/01 and Lemnos, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1903.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 675 in 1901/02, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Lemnos, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
