Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1876/77 (AH 1293), Mustafa Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa began work in Aleppo in 1896/97, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Mustafa in Aleppo, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1904/05. The last post was in Al-Faw (Fav) in 1905/06. In place of a title the lists give Lağv (abolition of the post) for 1899/1900.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Al-Faw, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 25,200 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
