Life#
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nasih Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Nasih had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1896/97, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Mehmet Nasih as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Diyarbakır. Next came a return to Aleppo, the birthplace, from 1899 to 1905. The last post was in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 350 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Kahramanmaraş, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 28,800 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
