Life#
Hüseyin Şefik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hüseyin Şefik also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1898/99, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, places Hüseyin Şefik in Jerusalem (Kudüs) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Beyoğlu and Pendik from 1899 to 1902 and İzmit in 1902/03, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1900/01.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 1,000 kuruş a month in 1898/99, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Jerusalem, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 250 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
