Life#
Mehmet Tahir Efendi was born in Yukarikopru in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mehmet Tahir also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Tahir began work in Beyoğlu in 1903/04, at about 24, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmet Tahir in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beyoğlu.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
