Life

Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299), Mehmet Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a lieutenant or candidate official (mülazım). Mehmet Şükrü had nine years of schooling, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 19, in 1901/02, Mehmet Şükrü began work in Beyoğlu, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Mehmet Şükrü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beyoğlu. The last posts were in Kastamonu in 1904/05 and Lüleburgaz in 1905/06.

The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 300 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Lüleburgaz, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 8,220 kuruş, 48 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
