Life#
Born in Gelibolu in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Midhat Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Ahmet Midhat also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Midhat began work in Gelibolu in 1891/92, at about 10, paid from the start, on 20 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, 33 started at 10 or younger. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1909/10 places Ahmet Midhat in the same office, correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi), in Gelibolu, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 20 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 250 in 1904/05, in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Gelibolu, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less.
