Life#
Born in Gelibolu in 1882/83 (AH 1300), İsmail Hakkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tomb keeper (türbedar). İsmail Hakkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1901/02, İsmail Hakkı began work in Gelibolu, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1905/06 places İsmail Hakkı in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Edirne.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 400 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. İsmail Hakkı probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Gelibolu doğumlu memurlar (1879-1909)" by OSMAN UMUT NAL (2026) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
