Life

Born in Edirne in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Mehmet Arif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Arif also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 18, in 1902/03, Mehmet Arif began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Edirne, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Mehmet Arif in Edirne, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Çanakkale in 1904/05.
