Life#
Mustafa Sami Efendi was born in Edirne in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Sami also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1901/02, Mustafa Sami began work in Edirne, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Mustafa Sami in Zlatograd (Darıdere) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Uzunköprü in 1904/05 and Edirne, the birthplace, in 1905/06.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Zlatograd, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 10,800 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
