Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293), Mehmet Rustu Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs director (rüsumat müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mehmet Rustu in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), where the entries run to 1896/97. The last posts were in Galata from 1897 to 1904, first as Iskele Memuru, from 1901/02 as Sahil Memuru.
The salary went from 40 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 400 in 1897/98, the peak, as Iskele Memuru in Galata, when one in three paid officials earned less.
