Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet İzzet Bey was the child of an official (memur). Schooling took 14 years, at the School of Civil Administration (Mülkiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Rusumat Kalemi in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 16, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1891/92, to 1909/10, every annual entry places Mehmet İzzet in the same post, customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1910/11 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 800 in 1909/10, as Rüsumat Memuru in Istanbul, when two in three paid officials earned less. In all, 19 years of salary come to 59,160 kuruş, 55 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The list of 1910/11 (AH 1328) gives the status word Vefat (death). Mehmet İzzet received a rank (rütbe).
