Life#
Mehmed Kemal Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmed Kemal began work in Istanbul in 1878, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Mehmed Kemal in Sivas as a postal official (Posta Memuru). Mehmed Kemal then moved to Gelibolu from 1883 to 1896. The last post was in Eceabat in 1896/97, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 500 in 1896/97, as 3. Müdür in Eceabat, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
