Life

Born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Dirtar Bogosyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a court official (mahkeme memuru). In all Dirtar Bogosyan knew four languages, Armenian, French and Turkish in writing and Greek (Rum) in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.

Dirtar Bogosyan began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1908/09, at about 24, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1909/10, with Dirtar Bogosyan as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu. The last post was in Ankara in 1911, with a rise to Ziraat Nezareti Muallimi.

The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1909/10 to 750 in 1911, the peak, as Ziraat Nezareti Muallimi in Ankara, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1911. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre İstanbul doğumlu Ermeni devlet adamları" by HARUN TUNCA (2016) probably refers to Dirtar Bogosyan, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and page and the archive register and second number agree.
