Life

Born in Istanbul in 1890/91 (AH 1308), Mahmut Celalettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mahmut Celalettin also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Istanbul in 1908/09, at about 17, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Both annual entries, for 1909/10 and 1910/11, place Mahmut Celalettin in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1909/10 to a peak of 400 in 1910/11, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Istanbul, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
