Life#
Hanna Afif Efendi was born in Tripoli (Trablusşam) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, and the father's occupation was "sandık emini". Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Hanna Afif also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Tripoli in 1888/89, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 320 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Hanna Afif as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beirut (Beyrut). Next came a return to Tripoli, the birthplace, from 1892 to 1895. The last posts were in Arsuz and İskenderun from 1896 to 1901 and Tripoli again in 1904/05, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1896/97. The lists have no entry for 1901 to 1904.
Pay rose from 320 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 500 in 1896/97, as 3. Müdür in Arsuz, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
