Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280), Şevket Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Şevket had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1878/79, Şevket began work in Beirut (Beyrut), with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 280 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Şevket in Beirut as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Şevket then moved to Damascus (Şam) from 1884 to 1886, then back to Beirut from 1886 to 1889. From 1889 to 1899 every annual entry places Şevket in Tripoli (Trablusşam).
The salary went from 280 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 450 in 1898/99, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Tripoli, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
