Life#
Abraham Efendi was born in Latakia (Lazkiye) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1889/90, Abraham began work in Beirut (Beyrut), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Abraham in Kırklareli as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Abraham to Beirut, Tripoli (Trablusşam), Adana, Silifke and Tarsus, five places in 13 years, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1899/1900. The lists have no entry for 1897 to 1899. The last posts were in Anamur from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 540 in 1905/06, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Anamur, when 62 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
