Life#
Ahmet Refik Efendi was born in Geyve in 1880/81 (AH 1298), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Muavin". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1897/98, Ahmet Refik began work in Geyve, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1901/02, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Ahmet Refik in the same post, transport official (Nakliye Memuru), in Geyve, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Nakliye Memuru in Geyve, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 15,000 kuruş, 52 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
