Life

Ali Sami Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Ali Sami began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Ali Sami in Adana as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Bandırma in 1893/94.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Adana, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
