Life#
Born in Adana in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Adana in 1887/88, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Adana, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1894/95. The annual lists then follow Hüseyin Hüsnü to Ceyhan (Hamidiye) and Payas from 1895 to 1899, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1898/99. The last posts were in Adana again from 1899 to 1905, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1900/01 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 550 in 1895/96, as 3. Müdür in Ceyhan, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 495 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
