Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Kirikork İskender Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a postal official (posta memuru). Kirikork İskender had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Büyükdere in 1883/84, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Kirikork İskender in Çanakkale as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Kirikork İskender to Büyükdere in 1885/86, then Yeniköy from 1886 to 1896. Next came Beyoğlu from 1896 to 1904. The last posts were in Izmir (İzmir) from 1904 to 1906.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 450 in 1903/04, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 106,020 kuruş, 81 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
