Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Mihran Yazmacıyan Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mihran Yazmacıyan had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Armenian and French.
Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 20, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Mihran Yazmacıyan in Beşiktaş as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1890/91. The annual lists then follow Mihran Yazmacıyan to Arnavutkoy in 1891/92, then Beyoğlu from 1892 to 1900. For 1900 to 1902 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Beirut in 1902/03 and Rhodes in 1903/04 and Symi (Sömbeki) from 1904 to 1906.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 500 in 1902/03, as Posta Memuru in Beirut, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 17 years of salary come to 63,000 kuruş, 62 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
