Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Eşref Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). Eşref had seven years of schooling, at the Islahhane Mektebi, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1887/88, Eşref began work in Thessaloniki, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Eşref as an official (Memur) in Thessaloniki, the birthplace. Next came Polygyros (Poliroz) from 1888 to 1891, with a rise to sergeant (Çavuş) in 1889/90. The last posts were in Bitola (Manastır) from 1892 to 1901, first as a deliverer (Müvezzi), from 1896/97 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 400 in 1900/01, as Posta Memuru in Bitola, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 37,392 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
