Life

Mehmet Fehmi Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Fehmi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.

Work began in Suriye in 1902/03, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Mehmet Fehmi as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Hama. For 1903 to 1906 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Aleppo (Halep) in 1906/07.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Seyyar Memur in Hama, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
