Life

Mehmet Aziz Efendi was born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Aziz also wrote Arabic, English and Turkish.

Work began in Izmir (İzmir) in 1888/89, at about 18, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Mehmet Aziz as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Izmir. Next came Jaffa (Yafa), Saray, Adana and Bajil (Bacil), four places in nine years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1894/95, then Cebeli garibi from 1898 to 1904. The last post was in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1904/05, with a rise to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini). Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. The farthest post, Bajil, lay about 2,200 km from Sidon, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.

Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 1,500 in 1904/05, as Müfettiş Muavini in Tripoli, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
