Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Raşit Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Raşit also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Raşit began work in Beirut in 1888/89, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mehmet Raşit in Latakia (Lazkiye) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Beirut, the birthplace, from 1892 to 1900, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 450 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beirut, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
