Life#
Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a policeman (polis). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 17, in 1896/97, Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Ali Rıza as an official (Memur) in Galata. Next came Istanbul from 1898 to 1903, with a rise to a post in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti). The last post was in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1903/04.
