Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hasan Selahattin Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Selahattin began work in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1896/97 to 1905/06 places Hasan Selahattin in the same post, official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), in Galata.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 270 in 1905/06, as Mersule Memuru in Galata, when 22 per cent of paid officials earned less.
