Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Tahsin Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1892/93, Mustafa Tahsin began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1894/95, to 1903/04, every annual entry places Mustafa Tahsin in the same post, official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 40 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 200 in 1903/04, the peak, as Mersule Memuru in Istanbul, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less.
