Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Salih Salim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an accounts official (muhasebe memuru). Salih Salim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1890/91, Salih Salim began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1894/95 to 1903/04 places Salih Salim in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi), from 1901/02 as Tetkik Memuru and from 1903/04 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru).
The salary went from 40 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 250 in 1903/04, the peak, as Mevrude Memuru in Istanbul, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 10,800 kuruş, 18 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
