Life#
Born in Sivas in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Mehmed Ramiz Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmed Ramiz also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Bursa in 1894/95, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Mehmed Ramiz in Kadınhanı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmed Ramiz to Konya, Serres (Siroz) and Shkodër (İşkodra) from 1897 to 1905. The last post was in Komotini (Gümülcine) in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Komotini, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 42,120 kuruş, 71 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
