Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1878 (AH 1295), Mehmet Halid Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a member of the learned profession (ilmiye). Mehmet Halid had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1896/97, Mehmet Halid began work in Bayburt, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Halid in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Erzurum, the birthplace.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 350 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzurum, when 32 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 15,600 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
