Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1878 (AH 1295), Ahmet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet began work in Sidon (Sayda) in 1899/1900, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Ahmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Haifa (Hayfa). The last posts were in Beirut, the birthplace, from 1902 to 1907.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 320 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Beirut, when 34 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 21,840 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
