Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Hafız Ethem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at the Terakki Mektebi.
Work began in Galata in 1902/03, at about 21, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Ethem in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Galata.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 40 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Galata, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 1,440 kuruş, 9 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
