Born in Istanbul in 1885/86 (AH 1303), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). The official had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Galata in 1904/05, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place the official in Galata as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru).
