Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Osman Nuri also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Galata in 1905/06, at about 19, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Osman Nuri in Galata as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to a peak of 340 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Galata, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
