Mustafa Ferit Efendi was born in Bolu in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Ferit also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 16, in 1891/92, Mustafa Ferit began work in Düzce, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1896/97 and 1897/98, place Mustafa Ferit in Karadeniz Ereğli as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97, as Muhabere Memuru in Karadeniz Ereğli, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
