Life#
Born in Bolu in 1878 (AH 1295), Ali Osman Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Mabeyni Humayun Ascisi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Osman began work in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. From 1897/98 to 1902/03 every annual entry places Ali Osman in Istanbul, first in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi), from 1901/02 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru).
Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 100 in 1899/1900, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less.
