Life

İsmail Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 20 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1897/98 to 1901/02 places İsmail in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), from 1901/02 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit).

The salary went from 20 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 150 in 1901/02, the peak, as Mukayyit in Istanbul, when 5 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 5,040 kuruş, 16 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
