Life#
Mehmet Emin Efendi was born in Bolu in 1888/89 (AH 1306) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tax collector (tahsildar). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mehmet Emin also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1904/05, Mehmet Emin began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Bolu, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1909/10, places Mehmet Emin in Kastamonu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Bartın in 1910/11.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1909/10, as Muhabere Memuru in Kastamonu, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1910/11. Mehmet Emin received a rank (rütbe).
