Life#
Mehmet Ubeydi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1886/87 (AH 1304) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Musevvit". Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Mehmet Ubeydi also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Mehmet Ubeydi began work in Eyüpsultan in 1905/06, at about 18, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1905/06, with Mehmet Ubeydi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Eyüpsultan. Mehmet Ubeydi then moved back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1907 to 1909. The last posts were in Fatih from 1909 to 1911.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to a peak of 800 in 1910/11, as Muhabere Memuru in Fatih, when 64 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 18,120 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
